The Relic Biker: Hand-Burnished Vintage "Oiled-Grain" Jacket

A truly vintage jacket isn't just about a faded color — it's about the story written into the creases of the leather. The Relic Biker is our tribute to the 1960s café racer subculture.

We start with a naked top-grain hide and apply a triple-stage oil-pull-up finish — creating a Memory-Grain effect where lighter tones of amber and tan surface from beneath the deep mahogany base whenever the leather bends or stretches.

This is a jacket that captures your movements. The more you wear it, the more it becomes yours. Every sleeve-crease is a unique map of your journeys.

The "Legacy-Spec" Distressing

  • Manual Edge-Burnishing: We don't use machines to "age" our leather. Every seam, cuff, and collar edge is hand-sanded and treated with a natural beeswax compound. This creates the "High-Wear" look of a vintage original without compromising the structural integrity of the 1.1mm hide.

  • The "Tea-Core" Transition: We utilize a traditional vegetable-tanning base. Over years of use, the dark top pigment will slowly give way to the natural "tea-colored" hide underneath at high-friction points like the elbows and pocket flaps. This is the ultimate "Holy Grail" for vintage leather collectors.

  • Antique Brass Hardware: We’ve avoided shiny chrome in favor of Weathered Brass zippers and snaps. These have been "pre-oxidized" to a dull gold finish, ensuring they blend seamlessly with the jacket’s warm, earthy tones.

Ergonomics: The "Broken-In" Feel from Day One

One of the biggest issues with vintage-style jackets is "stiffness." We’ve solved this through a Pre-Softening Drum Tumble.

  • The "Second-Skin" Drape: The 1.1mm lambskin-bovine hybrid is tumbled for 24 hours with smooth stones. This breaks down the protein fibers just enough to give you that "effortless" drape the moment you put it on. The lambskin component provides the fine grain and immediate softness. The bovine component provides the structural density that maintains the café racer silhouette over time. Neither alone achieves both — the hybrid does.

  • Optimal Range: 10°C to 22°C (50°F to 72°F).

  • The "Tobacco" Cotton Lining: The interior is lined with a high-thread-count brushed cotton in a vintage "Tobacco" brown. It’s softer against a t-shirt than synthetic polyesters and provides a breathable, non-slip layer for all-day comfort.

Care:

  • Hanging: Wide wooden or padded hanger always. The pre-softened drape of the drum-tumbled hide maintains its shape best on a consistent hanger — never fold or compress the Relic during storage.
  • Storing: Breathable cotton garment bag in a cool dry space away from direct sunlight. The vegetable-tanned base and oil-pull-up finish are particularly sensitive to UV — prolonged sunlight accelerates the Tea-Core transition unevenly rather than allowing it to develop naturally through wear.
  • Conditioning: Beeswax-based leather conditioner every four to six months — specifically formulated for oil-pull-up or pull-up vegetable-tanned leather. The beeswax feeds the same compound used in the manual edge-burnishing process maintaining continuity of the finish throughout the jacket's life. Never use synthetic conditioners or wax-polishes which can disrupt the vegetable-tanning base.
  • Drying: If wet allow to air dry naturally at room temperature on a wide hanger. Once dry apply a light beeswax conditioning to restore the oil matrix. The Memory-Grain effect may temporarily intensify when wet — the amber tones becoming more visible until the hide fully dries and the mahogany base returns.
  • Cleaning: Barely damp cloth for surface dust. For deeper marks consult a professional vegetable-tanned leather specialist — the unique triple-stage finish requires specialist treatment that standard leather cleaners cannot provide without disrupting the patina development process.
